RSVP to gain access to Patagonia's live panel discussion about backcountry touring on 19 November 2020,  8pm CEST // 7pm BST // 11am PST.

Our community was built on sliding down snow. On the constant learning to be better backcountry partners. By building gear that’s made for long days of breaking trail, many seasons and many turns. And committing to a lifetime of honing a mountain craft that’s progressive in both how we move through the mountains, but also in how we fight for winter. We don’t want the next generations to go snow-hungry. And while we’re here, we’re going to enjoy the mountains too. So, we started asking: What tracks are we setting? What are we doing for winter? What values are we leaving behind?

Giulia Monego

Giulia is an Italian UIAGM mountain guide with a true passion for skiing. Born in Venice, at sea level, she moved soon after to the beautiful Dolomites and made them her home for many years.

Skiing has always been part of her life, but her commitment has changed over the years. First was alpine racing. Then she lived her ‘dream life’ as a professional skier for many years, freeriding competitively (she won the Verbier Xtreme comp and competed in the FWT) and travelling in search of new places to ski. Ski-mountaineering and exploration were her biggest sources of inspiration. She scored first descents in India, Alaska, Ecuador, Bolivia, China and New Zealand and she still dreamsof new places to visit on her skis.

Following her professional career, she has dedicated herself to ski teaching and guiding to share her passion for the mountains with others, in the winter as well as in the summer. She now works as a mountain guide in Chamonix where she is based all year around.

Blair Fyffe

Blair has always been interested in snow and ice. He grew up in the Highlands of Scotland where he learnt to ski on the rather fickle Scottish snowpack. At university he studied astrophysics at undergraduate level, then went on to complete a PhD in dry snow slab avalanche modelling. This was based in Scotland but included five months at the SLF (the Swiss snow and avalanche research institute).

He has worked in a number of roles and locations, including twice overwintering in Antarctica. These days, Blair is based on the West coast of Scotland where, during the winter months, he works as an avalanche forecaster and enjoys getting out skiing and climbing whenever possible.

Per As

Per left Gothenburg in Sweden for Chamonix, and his first full ski season, at the age of 18. That was 32 years ago and he’s never left the mountains. In the early 90s, he heard of a wild place called La Grave in the southern French Alps. He has been living there ever since.

Per is an IFMGA mountain guide and has guided people in skiing and climbing, all over the world, for 25 years. For many years, Per has been involved in the training programme for future Swedish IFMGA mountain guides and still works as an instructor and examiner.

”I am very fortunate to be able to travel to a lot of remote places for skiing. Ski touring is a great excuse to see new and beautiful places, and to meet interesting people. Every time I skin up towards a col or a summit, it gives me that very special, curious need to look over the other side. I just love that.

Although travel is exciting, I do love to explore the areas and valleys around where we live, and - for obvious reasons - even more so now.”
